Prevention
The surest way to alleviate the pain and suffering caused by canine and feline cancer is prevention.
Like most cancers, genetics plays a key role in whether or not your dog or cat develops a particular form of the disease. However, the role other risk factors play is largely unexplored. The Dog and Cat Cancer Fund will be directly involved in studying the non-genetic, risk factors leading to canine and feline cancer.
Did you know pets are often contaminated with toxic chemicals found in the home? A recent study by the Environmental Working Group found:
“American pets are polluted with even higher levels of many of the same synthetic industrial chemicals that researchers have recently found in people, including newborns.”
Since many cancers in both humans and pets are related to environmental exposure to carcinogens, please see how you can protect your pet.
We will be working directly with veterinarians and pet owners to collect information about dogs and cats that have been diagnosed with cancer. Our hope is that this information will help our pets live healthier, cancer-free lives.
